Colour & Custom Finishes

At Artis Pura, frames are more than a finishing touch — they are an opportunity for creativity, colour and craftsmanship.

One of my favourite parts of this job is sitting down with a client and exploring the possibilities. Sometimes the perfect frame doesn't exist until we make it.

Whether it's a hand-painted frame, a bold matboard, or an unexpected combination of tones, colour can transform the way an artwork feels within a space. Sometimes the perfect frame disappears quietly into the background. Sometimes it sings.

From subtle washes and custom-painted finishes to vibrant mounts and playful combinations, we love helping clients find just the right balance.

Custom Colour

At Artis Pura, we aren't afraid of colour. A vibrant edge, an unexpected combination of tones, a flash of bright colour paired with black, white or natural timber — these details can completely transform the way an artwork is experienced. Some finishes are subtle and sophisticated. Others are playful, bold and impossible to ignore.

Custom Frame Finishes

Many of our frames are hand-finished in the studio using layers of paint, waxes, pigments, gilding and decorative techniques to create something truly unique.

Our custom finishes may include hand-painted frames, layered colours, textured surfaces, decorative corner embellishments, coloured and gilded bevels, hand-painted matboards, watercolour washes and bespoke details tailored specifically to the artwork.

Every finish is created with the artwork in mind. Sometimes the frame quietly supports the piece. Sometimes it becomes part of the artwork.

Either way, the result is framing that could never have come from a catalogue.

A thoughtfully designed mount can transform the way an artwork is experienced.

Beyond simply surrounding an image, matboards offer opportunities for colour, texture, depth and imagination. From elegant double mounts and museum-quality 8-ply boards to gilded bevels, decorative corners, hand-painted finishes, fabric wraps, calligraphy, custom text, ovals, circles and shaped openings, each detail contributes to the overall presentation.

Whether subtle and refined or bold and unexpected, we enjoy exploring creative mount designs that complement both the artwork and the space it will call home.

Sometimes the magic happens between the artwork and the frame.

From quietly elegant to delightfully theatrical, these finishing touches are where craftsmanship meets imagination

Decorative Matboards

  • I have had several pieces of Japanese ukiyo-e framed at ARTIS PURA. Each frame has been unique and complements the artwork, and as a couple of my pieces are more than 160 years old, it's a relief to know they're protected under conservation-quality glass.
