Glass vs Acrylic: Which Should You Choose?

One of the most common questions in custom framing is whether to choose traditional glass or modern acrylic glazing. The answer depends on the artwork, its size, where it will be displayed, and how it will be handled.

Glass remains the preferred option for many collectors because of its exceptional clarity, scratch resistance, and ease of cleaning. Premium conservation and museum-grade glass products also provide excellent ultraviolet protection while offering a viewing experience that allows the artwork to shine without distraction.

Acrylic has its own advantages. It is lighter than glass and far more impact-resistant, making it an excellent choice for oversized works, locations where safety is a concern, or pieces that need to be transported frequently. Museums and galleries often use specialised acrylic products for these reasons.

However, acrylic can attract dust through static electricity and is generally more susceptible to scratching than glass. Certain delicate media, including pastels and charcoal drawings, require particular care because loose particles may be affected by static charges.

Rather than thinking of one material as universally better than the other, consider them as different tools suited to different circumstances. An experienced framer will recommend the glazing that best balances protection, presentation and practicality for your individual piece.

Ultimately, the right choice is the one that keeps attention focused on the artwork itself while providing appropriate long-term protection.
