Textiles & Canvas stretching

From embroidery, cross stitch and tapestries to stretched canvases and contemporary fibre art, each piece is supported with conservation-minded care.

Textiles have a presence unlike any other art form. They carry memory in their fibres—the rhythm of the maker's hands, the history of the fabric, the softness of wear, the tension of a stitch. Whether contemporary fibre art, embroidery, cross stitch, antique samplers, tapestries, garments, felted works, rugs or treasured family heirlooms, textile pieces require a thoughtful approach that balances support, preservation and presentation.

My connection with textiles began long before I became a picture framer. I learnt to sew as a young girl alongside my mum and have been fascinated by fabric, fashion, design and construction ever since. I later studied fashion design and worked for many years as a costume and set designer for circus, burlesque and theatre productions, creating, altering and repairing garments where every seam, drape and detail mattered. Vintage fashion has always been a particular passion of mine, and I've spent countless hours studying the construction techniques, fabrics and craftsmanship of garments from different eras.

That background has given me an intimate understanding of how textiles behave—their weight, movement, fragility and structure—and it naturally informs my approach to conservation framing.

At Artis Pura, every textile is approached individually using conservation-minded techniques that provide secure support while minimising stress on delicate fibres. Depending on the piece, this may include hand-laced mounting, fabric-covered supports, invisible stitching, padded mounts or custom-built framing solutions designed specifically for the artwork.

Canvas Stretching

A beautifully stretched canvas forms the foundation of a great framing project.

Whether you're an artist preparing work for exhibition or a collector needing an unstretched painting professionally mounted, every canvas deserves careful handling and even tension to ensure it will remain stable for years to come.

Artis Pura stretches canvases over high-quality stretcher frames, available in sustainably sourced New Zealand pine or Western Red Cedar, selected to suit the size and requirements of each artwork.

Whether contemporary acrylics, indigenous artworks, historic oils or delicate painted canvases, every piece is handled with the same conservation-minded care that underpins all of our framing.

  • I think you know you've done an amazing job when I walk in and burst into tears when you unwrap the masterpiece. It's gorgeous; I love it. You've gone beyond what I imagined in my head it would look like. So helpful, open to ideas, and amazing at what you do. Thank you for creating this piece that I know I will certainly treasure forever.
